Parallel parking is one of the most commonly requested manoeuvres on driving tests from both Hither Green and Lewisham test centres. Knowing where examiners typically ask you to perform it gives you a huge advantage. Here are the top locations our Forest Hill instructors use for practice.
Why Location Matters for Parallel Parking
Not all streets are equal when it comes to parallel parking. Examiners choose roads that are wide enough to be safe but challenging enough to test your skills. They look for streets with a mix of parked cars, good visibility, and moderate traffic. Understanding these locations means you can practise in the exact conditions you will face on test day.
1. Torridon Road, Hither Green
This is arguably the most popular parallel parking location for Hither Green test routes. Torridon Road is a wide residential street with cars parked on both sides, giving examiners plenty of gaps to choose from.
What to expect:
- Cars parked bumper-to-bumper with occasional gaps of two car lengths
- Moderate traffic from residents coming and going
- Slight camber towards the kerb which can affect steering
- Speed bumps nearby that slow approaching traffic
Our tip: Use the driveways as reference points. Pull up level with the car in front of the gap, check all mirrors, then begin your reverse. The wide road gives you plenty of room to correct if needed.
2. Ennersdale Road, Hither Green
Located right near the test centre itself, Ennersdale Road is frequently used because examiners can request the manoeuvre at the start or end of the test without detouring.
What to expect:
- Quieter than Torridon Road with less passing traffic
- Parked cars on the left side heading away from the test centre
- Good visibility in both directions
- Flat road surface making clutch control easier
Our tip: Because this street is close to the test centre, you may see other test candidates practising here. Stay calm and focus on your own manoeuvre. The quiet nature of this road makes it an ideal confidence builder.
3. Verdant Lane, Catford
A slightly narrower residential street that appears on Hither Green routes heading towards Catford. Examiners use this to test your ability to park on tighter roads.
What to expect:
- Narrower road width means less margin for error
- Cars parked on both sides creating a corridor effect
- Occasional oncoming traffic you may need to pause for
- Trees along the pavement that can obscure your view
Our tip: On narrower streets, your starting position is critical. Pull up slightly closer to the parked car ahead of the gap, around half a door width. This gives you a better angle for the reverse without swinging too far into the road.
4. Nightingale Grove, Lewisham
For those testing at Lewisham, Nightingale Grove near the test centre is a common parallel parking spot. The street has a gentle curve which adds an extra challenge.
What to expect:
- Gentle curve in the road affecting your reference points
- Mix of residential and commercial vehicles parked along the street
- Pedestrians walking to and from the nearby shops
- Good street lighting and clear kerb lines
Our tip: On curved roads, your usual reference points may shift slightly. Rely more on your left mirror to judge distance from the kerb rather than looking over your shoulder. Practise here multiple times to get comfortable with the curve.
5. Brockley Road Side Streets
Several quiet residential streets branching off Brockley Road are used on Lewisham test routes. Streets like Wickham Road and Harefield Road are popular choices.
What to expect:
- Very quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Well-maintained kerbs with clear edges
- Gaps between parked cars are often generous
- Flat terrain making the manoeuvre straightforward
Our tip: These streets are ideal for building confidence. The generous gaps and quiet traffic mean you can focus purely on technique. Once comfortable here, move to tighter spots on busier roads.
Key Parallel Parking Technique Reminders
- Observation is everything: Check all mirrors and blind spots before and during the manoeuvre
- Slow and steady: Use clutch control to keep the car moving at walking pace
- Reference points: When the rear of the target car aligns with your rear passenger window, begin steering left
- Kerb distance: Aim to finish within 30cm of the kerb without touching it
- Corrections are fine: Pulling forward to adjust is not a fault as long as you check observations
