5 Trickiest Junctions on Forest Hill Driving Test Routes

After teaching hundreds of learners in Forest Hill and SE23, we've identified the junctions that cause the most problems on driving tests. Here's how to tackle each one with confidence.

1. The South Circular at Forest Hill (A205)

The South Circular Road running through Forest Hill is one of the busiest routes in South London, and several junctions along it feature on test routes.

The challenge: Fast-moving traffic, multiple lanes, and complex traffic light sequences. The junction at Stanstead Road is particularly demanding.

How to handle it:

  • Approach in the correct lane well in advance – lane changes are difficult once you're close
  • Watch the traffic lights carefully; they have different phases for different lanes
  • Don't be intimidated by traffic behind you – take your time to find a safe gap
  • Use your mirrors constantly as vehicles may undertake or overtake

2. Brockley Rise / Honor Oak Park Junction

This busy junction connects several major roads and is a common feature on routes from both Hither Green and Lewisham test centres.

The challenge: Multiple roads meeting at odd angles, heavy traffic, and confusing road markings.

How to handle it:

  • Know which exit you need before you arrive
  • Position early in the correct lane
  • Watch for cyclists filtering through traffic
  • The pedestrian crossing just after the junction catches many learners – be ready to stop

3. Catford Gyratory System

This multi-lane gyratory around Catford town centre is notorious among learner drivers.

The challenge: Multiple lanes, frequent lane changes required, heavy traffic, and confusing signage.

How to handle it:

  • Follow the road markings precisely – they guide you to the correct lane
  • Signal early and check mirrors before every lane change
  • Don't panic if you end up in the wrong lane – go with the flow and find a safe place to turn around
  • Watch for buses and lorries that may straddle lanes

4. Lee Green Crossroads

Where Lee High Road meets Lee Road and Burnt Ash Road, this crossroads is deceptively tricky.

The challenge: Traffic from four directions, no traffic lights, and limited visibility due to parked cars and buildings.

How to handle it:

  • Approach slowly and be prepared to stop
  • Creep forward to improve your view if necessary
  • Make eye contact with other drivers when possible
  • Remember: traffic on the main road has priority, but always double-check

5. Lewisham Roundabout (Lewisham Gateway)

The large roundabout near Lewisham Shopping Centre has been redesigned but remains challenging.

The challenge: Multiple exits, heavy traffic, pedestrian crossings on exits, and DLR tracks nearby.

How to handle it:

  • Know your exit number before you arrive
  • Stay in lane – the road markings are clear if you follow them
  • Watch for pedestrians on zebra crossings at each exit
  • Check mirrors before exiting as traffic may be alongside you
