Driving Test Day Checklist: Everything You Need to Know

Test day has arrived! After all your hard work and practice, it's time to show the examiner what you can do. Here's everything you need to know to ensure your test day goes smoothly.

Documents You Must Bring

Without the correct documents, your test will be cancelled and you'll lose your fee. Make sure you have:

  • Your valid provisional driving licence (photocard)
  • Your theory test pass certificate (if taking the practical test)

Check these documents the night before and put them somewhere safe. Many candidates have had their tests cancelled for forgetting their licence!

The Night Before

Get everything ready the evening before your test:

  • Lay out comfortable clothes and flat shoes
  • Check your documents are ready
  • Avoid alcohol completely
  • Get an early night – aim for 8 hours of sleep
  • Set multiple alarms if you're worried about oversleeping

Test Day Morning

Give yourself plenty of time on test day morning:

  • Eat a light, healthy breakfast
  • Avoid excessive caffeine
  • Wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes
  • Bring water and any prescribed glasses or contact lenses
  • Arrive at the test centre 10 minutes early

What Happens During the Test

The practical driving test lasts about 40 minutes and includes:

  • An eyesight check (reading a number plate from 20 metres)
  • Two vehicle safety questions ("show me, tell me")
  • General driving on various roads
  • One reversing manoeuvre
  • Independent driving for about 20 minutes
  • Possibly an emergency stop (1 in 3 tests)

Tips for During the Test

Stay calm: Take deep breaths if you feel nervous. The examiner wants you to pass.

Ask for clarification: If you don't understand an instruction, ask the examiner to repeat it.

Don't panic over mistakes: Minor faults don't mean you've failed. Keep driving normally.

Take your time: There's no rush. Drive at a safe, appropriate speed.

After the Test

The examiner will tell you immediately whether you've passed or failed. If you pass, you'll receive a pass certificate. If you don't pass this time, you'll receive feedback on what to work on, and you can book another test after 10 working days.
